Gongguan Junior High School in Miaoli County Successfully Promotes International Education
Over the past two days, 70 teachers from across Taiwan visited Miaoli to observe Gongguan Junior High School’s international education programs. The school provided hands-on experiences for the visiting teachers, allowing them to participate in classes, including challenge-based activities, Hakka culinary workshops, and community visits. Through this curriculum exchange, participants gained a deeper understanding of international education that is rooted in local culture.
On the first day, visitors attended a World Café program in Yuanli, Miaoli. The highlight took place on the second day at Gongguan Junior High School and the surrounding Gongguan Township. The school’s music class performed classic Disney animation soundtracks, using music to bridge connections among participants. Teachers then engaged in challenge-based activities, using greetings from different countries as passcodes, with hosts introducing unique cultural features from each country.
Additional activities included hands-on Hakka cuisine workshops, tasting local dishes, learning about Hakka culture, visiting Shiweicang community, practicing straw rope-making, and touring Miaoli’s cultural exhibition halls. Through a full day of interactive experiences, participants trained their five senses while connecting lessons to daily life, fully experiencing the school’s international curriculum.
Officials attending the event included Secretary Dong Qing-Feng of the Ministry of Education’s Department of International and Cross-Strait Education, Deputy Director Hsu Chien-Nan of the Miaoli County Education Department, and Director Wang Zhi-Xiang of the Academic Affairs Section.
Principal Fang Li-Ping of Gongguan Junior High School shared that over the past two years, the school has integrated local culture into international education. While international education often emphasizes foreign history and culture, the school’s curriculum combines global issues with local perspectives, deepening students’ understanding of both international topics and their hometown, Miaoli.
Lin Xiang-Yin, convener of the Taiwan International Education Travel Alliance 2.0, commented that the school’s curriculum design is highly thoughtful, offering rich geographic and cultural experiences for both local and international students. Participants felt as if they were visiting regions such as Nagano and Yamagata in Japan, highlighting Miaoli’s growing international engagement in recent years.
Deputy Director Hsu Chien-Nan emphasized that the county government encourages schools to integrate local features with international topics and to extend learning beyond the classroom. By allowing students to learn through real-life experiences, schools can achieve the goal of “the more local, the more international.” This exchange event also showcased Miaoli’s soft power in curriculum and teaching innovation.
